The RipIT Lame mini howto
Note that the free lossless audio codec Flac and the oggenc might already be installed on your machine!
Here you find basic help and instructions where to download and how to install lame (needed to create mp3 files):
Which version of Lame do I use?
  • type lame --help.
  • Download
Either use the link to the rpm file from packman lame-3.96.1 rpm for SuSE 9.2, or check for your lame.rpm in the home directory of packman lame-3.96.1 rpm in Packman, and you're done!
It was always very easy to install lame with tarballs: Go to freshmeat or directly to the homepage of LAME or the download area. I use the not up to date version 3.93.1 and it works fine!
Once downloaded, you can expand the tarball with the command
  • tar xvvfz lame-3.96.tar.gz .
  • Installation
As described in the INSTALL file, the installation goes straight in 3 classical steps (be sure to cd to the according directory)!
Logged in as su (super-user, with the Substitute-User command) you type
  • ./configure
  • make
  • make install
  • and you're done!
I remember, it was the very first tarball I installed years ago in this way, with success!
